Founded in Athens in 1987 by brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis, ROTTING CHRIST spent over a decade carving out a singular place in European extreme metal—moving from black metal's rawer edges through a series of increasingly atmospheric and gothic-tinged records that expanded their reach without diluting their identity. Khronos, originally released in 2000 and now reissued by Season of Mist, marks the end of that particular arc: a closing statement on the band's gothic era before they began the turn toward even darker and more mythologically charged territory.
The album occupies an uneasy, productive tension between the aggression of Rotting Christ's earlier years and the atmospheric refinement they had developed across the late 1990s. Recorded in the dead of a Nordic winter at Sweden's Abyss Studios, Khronos carries that cold in its production; something more subdued and ambient than its predecessor, with keyboards pushed back beneath the guitars rather than riding above them, and an overall texture that leans toward shadow rather than sheen. Tracks like "Thou Art Blind" and "Aeternatus" land with a ferocity not heard since Thy Mighty Contract, blunt, fast and uncompromising, while "My Sacred Path," "Art of Sin," and the title track hold onto the melodic intelligence of the gothic years, threading dark wave undercurrents through their slower, more insinuating structures. The closing "Glory of Sadness" stretches past eleven minutes, eventually giving way to an industrial-inflected hidden passage that signals, in its own oblique way, that a door is about to close.
Throughout, the album resists easy categorisation; neither a full return to roots nor a continuation of its predecessor's path, but something stranger and more considered sitting between the two.
